Have bearings designed by IBS for unique technical challenges
At IBS Rotterdam, we understand that standard bearings do not always meet the specific requirements of your application. Sometimes, your project demands a solution that deviates from the conventional. In such cases, you can rely on us to design custom bearings tailored precisely to your needs. With years of experience, a strong international network of manufacturing partners, and deep technical expertise, we offer custom solutions that work.
Why have bearings designed?
Many of our clients approach us with challenges that cannot be solved using a standard bearing. These include situations where:
- The available installation space is extremely limited;
- The bearing must withstand exceptional forces;
- There are specific requirements related to weight, precision, or material choice.
In such cases, custom-designed bearings are not a luxury—they are a necessity. Our goal is always to first explore whether a solution with standard components is possible. But when it’s not, we collaborate with our partners to design a fully custom bearing based on your technical specifications.
Your process: from challenge to solution
When you approach IBS to have a bearing designed, we initiate a thorough process. Our approach is clear, collaborative, and technically driven.
1. Initial contact
You contact us by email or phone. You describe the issue, and optionally provide technical drawings or photos. We analyze the situation and assess whether a custom solution is necessary.
2. On-site technical assessment
For serious custom design inquiries, we prefer to visit your location. Only by seeing the construction and issue firsthand can we provide well-founded advice. During this visit, we gather detailed information:
- When does the issue occur?
- How long has it been happening?
- After how many operating hours does the defect arise?
- What forces and loads are involved?
Using this data, we determine whether the problem actually lies with the bearing.
3. Technical analysis and design proposal
If it turns out that a standard bearing won’t suffice, we engage our international partners. We work with manufacturers in Germany, China, and the UK, among others. They can either produce custom bearings or adapt existing designs to meet your needs. Based on the technical constraints, we prepare an initial design.
4. Internal review and fine-tuning
Before presenting the design to you, we perform an internal quality check. Where needed, we implement technical improvements or optimizations. We then present the proposal to you, including a clear explanation of the design choices, benefits, and any limitations.
5. Approval and planning
Your engineers or technical staff are often involved in this phase. They critically review the design and compare it with the requirements of your application. Once you give approval, we produce a final drawing, complete with stamp and signature. This approval is crucial for the further process and ensures that all parties are accountable for the final result.

From drawing to delivery
6. Production proposal and quotation
Together with our manufacturing partners, we determine the most suitable production process. We prepare a quotation based on an agreed annual volume. We also make clear arrangements regarding inventory management:
- Will IBS hold stock?
- Will the customer receive the entire order in one delivery?
- Will part of the stock be stored at our manufacturer’s facility?
7. Production and logistics
Once the design and quotation are approved, production begins. The bearings are then shipped to the Netherlands by air or sea freight. For ongoing applications, we ensure that sufficient stock is always available. For one-time orders, we deliver the full quantity in a single shipment.
8. Aftercare
Our involvement does not end after delivery. Should an unexpected situation arise or a modification be needed, we are here to support you. Our goal is not just to supply a bearing, but to offer a reliable solution that strengthens your production process.
Real-world design challenges
Customers regularly approach us with complex challenges. A recurring issue is the replacement of bearings that wear out too quickly or fail prematurely. Sometimes, for example, a customer wants to use a bearing normally found in a heavy-duty motor in a small machine. In such cases, we assess the technical feasibility together and provide honest advice on what is possible.
Another common scenario involves machines that have been over-engineered. Clients then seek to cut costs by using lighter bearings. However, the machine may not be designed for that, which can lead to mounting issues or functional problems. Here, it's essential to strike a realistic balance between price, performance, and design flexibility.
Although we can provide a solution in 90% of cases, there are situations where even our extensive network cannot supply the ideal bearing. In those cases, we recommend a redesign or, if size, complexity, and cost permit, we produce the bearing specifically to your needs.
Why do customers choose IBS as a design partner?
Our clients value us for our personal approach, technical expertise, and honest communication. We do not shy away from a challenge, but we also don’t make unrealistic promises. When you choose IBS to design your bearings, you know you're working with a partner who truly understands your application.
And it works. Many customers return to us for new projects, not just because we’ve delivered quality in the past, but because they appreciate our transparency and solution-oriented mindset.
